SpaceX and Mars

SpaceX, the other company led by Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk, has an ambitious goal. It wants to put a human colony on Mars. If that sounds hard, it’s actually even harder to pull off. You don’t just have to put people on Mars. You have to move the infrastructure needed to support them. Big rockets are needed. Really big ones. During a packed session at GTC 2015, Adam Lichtl, SpaceX’s research director, noted that when the early pioneers crossed…

SpaceX Mars Mission

Elon Musk just said that his SpaceX spaceships will get humans to Mars by 2026, with or without NASA. It may seem cocky, but coming from a man who has built this entire company so he can die on Mars—and to help ensure the survival of humanity —those words are not to be taken lightly. I think it s certainly possible for that to occur. But the thing that matters long term is to have a self-sustaining city on Mars, to make life multi-planetary. A self-sustaining…

Inside SpaceX Ship Going to Mars

HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX unveiled the spaceship it expects to use to send NASA astronauts to the International Space Station, known as the Dragon V2, at its headquarters on Thursday amid surroundings as glitzy as an auto show. Maybe that shouldn t be surprising, considering that the company s billionaire founder, CEO and chief designer, Elon Musk, also runs the Tesla electric-car company. His SpaceX venture has even loftier ambitions than Tesla…

SpaceX Grasshopper Launch Location

An experimental reusable rocket built by the private spaceflight company SpaceX has soared though a series of ever-higher test flights over its Texas launch site, but it may have just taken its most awesome leap yet: a sideways rocket hop. Nicknamed Grasshopper, the rocket prototype successfully performed a sideways divert test yesterday (Aug. 13) at SpaceX s proving grounds in McGregor, Texas. SpaceX released an amazing video of the sideways Grasshopper…

SpaceX Launch Explode

Emphasizing that their findings were only an “initial assessment, ” Musk said that they believed that a broken strut—a two-foot-long piece of steel, an inch wide at its thickest point—was responsible for the rocket’s explosion, which had previously only been attributed to a “decompression event” in its liquid oxygen tanks. No one was injured, but the 4, pounds of cargo in the attached Dragon space capsule got blasted into smithereens. By design…

SpaceX Launch May 6

It worked. SpaceX performed a two minute test of its Dragon space capsule Wednesday morning, completing a key step toward its plan to carry astronauts for NASA by 2017. The space capsule and its trunk, which attaches to the bottom of the capsule, blasted off of a launch pad at Cape Canaveral. The two pieces quickly separated, and the capsule splashed down in the ocean about a mile off shore. SpaceX says its system provides greater safety for astronauts…
