SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket soars SpaceX rocket launches from Cape, landing fails

VIDEO OF WORKERS COMING FACE TO FACE WITH PEOPLE ARMED WITH GUNS. WHAT POLICE REVEAL ABOUT THIS ATTACK. BUT FIRST, WE BEGIN WITH LIFT-OFF FROM THE SPACE COAST. GOOD EVENING, I'M LISA BELL. I'M MATT AUSTIN. JUST MOMENTS AGO, SpaceX ANNOUNCED A CRITICAL LANDING ON - LANDING OFF THE COAST. IT DIDN'T QUITE GO AS PLANNED. LET'S GO TO LOCAL 6'S JUSTIN WARMOTH. IT LANDED OFF THE COAST OF JACKSONVILLE AND POSSIBLY EXPLODED. BUT THE LAUNCH AT CAPE CANAVERAL WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH. IT WAS PICTURE-PERFECT. IF YOU MISSED IT, HERE IT IS AGAIN. 3, 2, 1 AND LIFT-OFF. AND THERE IT IS. 208-FOOT FALCON9 ROCKET LAUNCHING FROM PAD 40 AT CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL AFTERNOON LAUNCH HERE. THE CAPSULE IS ON ITS WAY TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION WITH 4300 POUNDS OF SUPPLIES, SPARE PARTS AND SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS. WHILE SpaceX SAYS GETTING THE MUCH-NEEDED SUPPLIES TO ASTRONAUTS ON THE I.S.S. IS THEIR MAIN MISSION, THEY TRIED TO LAND THE ROCKET'S FIRST STAGE ON A FLOATING PLATFORM, 400 MILES OFF THE COAST OF JACKSONVILLE. THESE ARE PICTURES OF THE ATTEMPT JUST RELEASED MINUTES AGO. IT BARELY MISSED. THE GOAL IS TO ONE DAY BE ABLE TO LAND THE ROCKETS ON LAND AND ULTIMATELY REUSE THEM. THIS IS WHAT SpaceX C.E.O. ELON MUSK TWEETED OUT ABOUT 30 MINUTES AGO, THAT THE ROCKET LANDED ON THE PLATFORM, AS YOU SAW, BUT TOO HARD FOR SURVIVAL. HE GAVE IT JUST A 50/50 CHANCE AT BEING SUCCESSFUL AT BEST. NO WORD ON WHEN SpaceX WILL ATTEMPT THIS LANDING ATTEMPT AGAIN. BY THE WAY, THE SUPPLIES ON BOARD THE DRAGON CAPSULE SHOULD BE TO THE I.S.S. IN JUST A FEW DAYS. AMONG THE SUPPLIES, A COFFEE MAKER. I BET THE CREW WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE THAT. JUSTIN WARMOTH AT CAPE CANAVERAL FOR US. THANK YOU.

SpaceX on Tuesday launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station carrying a shipment of space station groceries, but the rocket landed on the droneship too hard for survival.

The unmanned rocket blasted off at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The space station was soaring above Australia, at liftoff time.

SpaceX hoped to land a leftover booster on an ocean platform on the third try, but SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted out shortly after the launch, "Ascent successful. Dragon enroute to Space Station. Rocket landed on droneship, but too hard for survival."

Dragon, the SpaceX supply ship, holds more than 4, 000 pounds of food, experiments and equipment for the six station astronauts. The delivery should arrive Friday.

The specially designed espresso machine is for Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. She's been stuck with American instant coffee since fall. The Italians in charge of the project hope to revolutionize coffee-drinking in space.

Monday's launch attempt was foiled by weather.
