Redmond Mayor John Marchione has said one of the reasons he loves Redmond is because “nowhere else on the Eastside can you buy an actual rocket engine.” Well Mr. Mayor, things could get a lot more interesting.
GeekWire reported the new office will be in Redmond, though SpaceX’s state business license lists a Bellevue address. Further details about the location of the soon-to-be office could be revealed on Friday when Musk is scheduled to visit the Seattle area for a private event at the Museum of Flight.
The potential location of the engineering office is exciting news for Redmond, if the rumor holds true. The city already holds a number of space travel-based companies, including Planetary Resources, which also develops satellites.
SpaceX will compete with the area technology companies, Boeing, and other space-travel companies for the area’s top engineers. Additionally, Musk has said in the past that video game engineers make great space travel engineers, and the Eastside has a plethora of those working at Xbox, Valve, Nintendo, and others.
SpaceX flies supply missions to the International Space Station and won a large piece of a contract to shuttle astronauts into space. The company, founded by Musk in 2002, made headlines in recent weeks for an attempt to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket on a barge in the ocean.
